Good points, Therion - I was

Good points, Therion - I was having some of these thoughts as well.

Given all the videos I've been watching of Morrowind, and also the small section of Morrowind present in the Dragonborn Skyrim DLC, it doesn't come across as entirely eastern to me as well. I don't necessarily disagree though in terms of choosing it stylistically; it would help distinguish the music from the original. Honestly, I think it's very important we make this soundtrack unique. Otherwise we're all just putting forth our best Soule impression, instead of contributing something that not only fits the game, but also allows us our artistic expressions. But it would be best to have some things outlined so that we have proper guidance. What is it about Morrowind that feels eastern, and how can we illustrate that musically? And what, exactly, do we understand as "eastern?" I think music scoring is one of the most subjective areas of creative content. One person's "techno" is another person's "house." So defining the specific "eastern" vibe we're aiming for will not only help our songs blend stylistically, but also specify elements that are too out there, and those that are appropriate.

Another area I'm struggling with is that some of the feedback on my pieces are centered around it "being too Skyrim." I recognize that Skyrim's soundtrack will always have a bigger influence on me because I've listened to it much more. But I've noticed feedback on other tracks praise them for being "reminiscent of Skyrim." I want to know what elements of Skyrim you find appealing, and which you think should be avoided. But even though they are two different soundtracks, like Therion said, they don't appear to be wildly different; I find many similarities between them. They feel like continuations of a whole; an overall style and tone for Elder Scrolls that Soule has cultivated.

To avoid being longwinded, I'll stop here and see if anyone even agrees with me, haha. I look forward to discussing this further. Oh, and PS: I'm still waiting on that Google Doc / cloud-based-document system that outlines the music contributions, who's doing what and where, etc. That would help tremendously with all this, too.

Tajnarasha Thanks for your

Tajnarasha

Thanks for your comments! I'll look into it.

Therion and Devin

I agree, at times it has been challenging to see the style we're
aiming for. Popular guidelines have been to stick close to original
soundtrack, avoid pianos, synth pads and overall epicness etc...
There's a bit of a contrast between that and direction we've been
moving towards. I wouldn't mind if these things like style and
instrumentation would be discussed and made more clear. It would allow
us to focus more efficiently.

Lisek Beautiful as always. I could see this being especially useful for Ashlander Camps. The voices lend themselves to a good mix of the tribal nature of the Dunmer while also giving it a regal feel. I like the mix of the pluck and light percussions. I like the combination of the harp melody and the voices the best so this would perhaps be a good area to expand. I got a very Dark Souls feel from it and trust me when I say that is a good thing; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpI-KeK-PQg. The instrumentation is perhaps the roughest part of your song so far so be careful in that section. A thing to consider may to be write the song as a demo and then pass it on to Devin, Teslightreturn or Therion so they can master it and you can record your voice on top of it. Very good start - I will be expecting more out of this one for sure.

Thanks Tajnarasha. The youtube link you gave me is so beautyful... And you are absolutely right. I will ask the guys to work with me on this piece...

Devin, Teslightreturn, Therion are you interested in helping me with this song?

Everybody is bringing up good

Everybody is bringing up good points here. Honestly, I feel our direction so far has been a good mix of ambient and world genre. I feel like this is a good direction, because it's open ended, leaving a lot of room for artistic expression, without sounding like we are ripping off a particular culture. It gives us a chance to create our own world in this game :)

Therion (& others)   I'm

Therion (& others)

I'm glad you brought this up, as it will help everyone get a more concise overview of what we need to think about when composing music for Skywind and how different elements, while fitting for some area, may not be so for another.   Morrowind is creatively challenging to compose for because it is such an almagations of different styles - you have the canyons of the West Gash inhabited by traders and bandits influenced by the Imperial colonists, you have the harsh deserts of the Ashlands reminescent of the early Dunmeri tribes, the magical and utterly alien regions of House Telvanni in Azura's Coast and the Egyptian-Venician-Vatican-reminescent city of Vivec. Trying to build a cohesive set of tracks that are able to encompass all the different aspects of Vvardenfel while remaining distincitvely identifiable as part of Morrowind is difficult, which is why we chose very early on to make ''tribal'' and ''eastern'' the predominant elements of the OST.     This isn't to say we want to limit ourselves to those notions; as I have pointed out above Morrowind is a vast and incredibly ecclectic place, which is probably why direction was nebulous and perhaps even paradoxal - and for that I apologize. Since this is not an isolated issue, I propose that other people give suggetions as to what each regions should sound like. What kind of instruments should we hear, what kind of mood, should we incorporate Soule's themes in a certain way, etc. The more feedback people are able to give, the clearer the vision will be. I encourage each artists making a claim for a region to generate discussion and involve others in their creative process so that dialog is more immediate and more accurate. I try to be as clear as possible but two heads are better than one - and I know for a fact some of you may be more knowledgeable than me in music or TES lore.     My choosing to place your track in the credits came of a discussion between another dev and myself, where we felt the dramatic movement of the cello really encapsulated the bittersweet ending of the game where the player is triumphant over Dagoth Ur but at the cost of knowing how the Dunmer were ultimately betrayed by those they thought their saviors. It was a toss-up between that and Ebonheart and ultimately we thought it would give more significance for your track to be used in the credits but if you feel differently I am absolutely open to place it in Vivec's neighboring fort :)

Teslightreturn I very much like what you've done. The Vivec day track has to easily be one of my favorite songs so far. Will edit these into the OP.

Marius

You need to use better-quality sounds for this, your song sounded digitalized and from an older generation of video games.

Antonioskt

Good editing so far Antonioskt! This is beginning to sound closer to something we could hear while fighting some Morrowind fauna; your song was a little repetitive however; try to add a little more variance in the background movements. You use similar notes for extended periods in your song and I think it could benefit a lot from a little added depth. Feel free to refer to JBMAC as I feel his song was a good example of a battle theme dynamic.     Stayed tuned for some additional resource material that will be created to help everyone a little better ;)

Hm. Too bad. How does it sound digitalized? Which of the instruments? The only thing sounding a bit altered is a bass tremolo in the background, but that's on purpose due to the theme.

OK guys, so here is the deal.

OK guys, so here is the deal. We have an amazing assortment of talent already assembled here on this forum, and after speaking with Taj we believe that its time to get organized! There are art teams and programming teams and level design teams, we are going to start the Skywind Music Team.

Everyone who has contributed thus far has done so at varying degrees of skill levels in terms of composition, production, performance, etc. This soundtrack is going to be a collaborative effort, and so its time to make it a full on collaboration.

I have purchased Dropbox space and set up a Skype chat for the newly minted "Skywind Music Team". A place where (like the developer chat that we use here on the site) ideas and work will be organized and discussed in a more immediate manner. The Dropbox is going to be a resource to be used by all of the musicians who are on the team so as to be sure that this soundtrack is not only the BEST soundtrack created for any mod, but that we will achieve the same level of quality as Skyrim and Morrowind itself.

This means that from here on out, this project will be a team effort 100%. People who wish to contribute and be brought onto the team will need to post examples of their work here in the Music Hub thread (or possibly a newly created thread) with an introduction about themselves and what they believe they can bring to the project. We need writers, engineers, players, you name it and we will probably want it!

However, this means that the soundtrack might not have quite as much of a "free for all" approach as it has had up until now. We will still only accept the absolute highest quality of production and composition to be used in the final game's OST. This collaboration is to help inspire and motivate you and your peers to create melodies, harmonies, arrangements, performances, etc that are not only original and creative, but memorable and perfectly suited to their environment. Your ideas may or may not be used. Your pieces may or may not be used. We can all share midi data, audio files, recordings, sample libraries, etc using Dropbox so that people's ideas can get out there and be commented on and refined to be the best they possibly can be. We can all share ideas and compositional concepts via the Skype chat.

If you feel like you have come up with a fantastic melody for a flute but you dont feel like your sample library will do it justice, post your midi files in the Dropbox folder and ask for help with the mix and recording! If you are having a bit of writers block or just want some advice on how to bring out the most in your work, post up in the Skype chat about your progress, send out audio files of your work so far and get feedback as soon as possible from your fellow compositional peers. We will decide, as a team, which ideas are up to the highest standard. We will, as a team, work to bring those ideas out aurally in the most creative and evocative ways possible.

Hopefully these resources will allow this already formed community of musicians to organize better, and create a full soundtrack for Skywind that feels 100% cohesive from track-to-track, and remains a fully collaborative effort at the same time. Maybe your sequencing and mixing skills are not up to the quality that is needed, but your writing ability is! Being on a team of multi-talented artists will guarantee that your contributions will be credited, and somebody can help you get your ideas out in a way that can make it onto the final OST.

So, please PM myself or Taj with your Skype details and email address to be given Dropbox access and be included in the Skype chat. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns or comments you may have about anything!

Cheers!
-Michael

Barren was a really great piece – I love how you were able to sing this in a similar style that Lisek did in Whispers but with a lighter, more exploration-appropriate tone. I could really see this being a very effective sound for the Ashlands, the Ashlander camps or even Ald’ruhn. I liked the minimal percussions as they really embellished the focus on your voice. There’s definitely a very strong tribal/dunmeri vibe in this that I’d like you to expand upon so that we can make a proper 5-ish minute track for in-game ambience.

 Bausic

Not a bad start to a theme, I would personally bring the harp down an octave or two however. What did you have in mind for this theme? Where do you think it could play/which region? Once that is chosen we can start discussion what sort of themes and sounds that should be incorporated in your track.

Antti

Good improvement! I’d really like to bring that song into the Grazelands. I like how the main part feels like an African savannah and how you brought some of those elements back into the end like at the start of the song. I’m still a little iffy on the violin because I feel like it stands out quite a bit in contrast to the rest of your song – instead of flowing into the song it sort of sticks out like a separate element. Maybe it’s because of the specific sound that you use for them? I’d really like to hear other people’s thoughts on this one and what Antti could do to bring this much closer to the Grazelands.

Therion

It is up to any of the artist’s discretion to have their material displayed in the video or not. Nothing will be used without their explicit consent, my only say in this matter is that I would prefer we stick to songs that are displayed in the OP. Would you like Masser & Secunda to be moved to Ebonheart btw – if that’s the case I’d really like you to compose a daytime variant for that Imperial Fort ;)

@ Stijmunkey

in this case you can of course use my skywind music if you find something of use (many tracks are still in the making). It would be nice if you could give me credit, or link to my youtube channel in the video description if you do.

@ Taj

Ok, you got me . Ill make a daytime track with a medieval/roman touch (is this ok?) for ebonheart and you use "M&S" for the end credits.

@Taj and TesLight

Thanks for your thoughts on the musical style matter. Maybe we should make a complete list (or even a map) where the different musical styles (open for discussion?) are noted per location and who is working on it to avoid several people working on the same thing and making the "wrong" design choices?

For example:

Ashlands daytime: tribal, exotic, slightly oriental, calm, depressive - available

Ashlands nighttime: finished

Red Mountain daytime: very exotic, oriental, otherworldly, slightly menacing -available

Red Mountain nighttime: very exotic, oriental, otherworldly, very menacing - TesLightReturn

Ebonheart daytime: slightly medieval/roman, calm, majestic - Therion

and so on.

What do you think?

Ok. Would someone like to comment on the violins in the end of Whispers and Wishes (extended)? If they seem too much I can push them more to the background, remove them or make some other edits. I surely can let them go, even though they're pretty

I have begun working on a house/home interior music. It's quite laid-back and has a certain Middle East feel in it. I'll have something to post in a couple of days!

Good work. May I suggest that you could go easier with the brass, especially from 1:15 onwards? I find the brass sound quite aggressive when compared to song's otherwise easy feel.

Announcement

The OP has been updated to incorporate a googledoc spreadsheet which lays out all of the information from before, all in a neat and very organized way! A skype-chat group has also been put in place which will work through invitation only. Claims for regions will have to be discussed and approved before being put on the sheet. Hey Matt

Hey Matt

Sorry about not answering your message - all my private messages were deleted with the website update and I wasn't able to look at yours.

I very much enjoyed both your ESO and Skyrim pieces. You could easily fool me into thinking that some of those were part of the original soundtrack for the game, which really speaks of their quality and your talent as a composer.

A couple things before we go; have you played Morrowind? If so, which region/place were you interested in composing for the most? If not, have you listened to Jeremy Soule's Morrowind OST? It will give you some clues as to what kind of iconic sounds were in the game to begin with, and we can then speak about the different regions and what kind of inspiration/elements you could incorporate in them musically.

Bausic

This song already sounds far more appropriate. I like the mixture of the brass and harp - it makes the whole thing sound almost like a war theme while being surprisingly soothing. I'm thinking there's a lot of potential for this song to be incorporated for the Fighter's Guild halls. Maybe someone else sees something different in your piece, but would you be interested in continuing this track with that in mind?

Plektron

This is an interesting take on Calm Waters. It's easy to recognize the theme but your piece also sounds distinct from That1Cactus' song. Did you have a specific area in mind when writing this? Needless to say I like it, but if you want to incorporate this for a region, I'd want you to write in accordance with the appropriate themes ;)

I believe you need a google

I believe you need a google account to be able to view the doc. The Bitter Coast currently has no material for it, and I believe that your song could be appropriate for it. Take a look at the sheet first and then hop on into the skype group chat if you aren't there already so we can discuss the general direction of the region if you're up to compose for it.

I would be very glad to work

I would be very glad to work my track in the direction of a fighters guild track but I am not quite sure what is the most important for such a theme. Should I add more drums and brass?

So far, I made the track a little longer, added (very light) background choir and made the brass a little bit more subtle ;)
