[WIP] Statue of Azura

Hi guys, so I've been working on one of the statues of Azura. And I was hoping for a bit of a critique.

Here is the original mesh.

I've started by working on the head, and here is what I've got so far.

That is a great start, but I

That is a great start, but I think she could use some Dunmeric facial features. Dunmer is what her general appearance is by default, and especially when she manifests herself among them. She had a Dunmer face in Morrowind whenever she appeared, but I admit it's very hard to see on the statues (some of the facial features were kept though).

I made a quick repaint of that render, I hope it's useful for further work ;) We don't need to make her as ugly as the original Azura, but some alien Dunmer facial features would add greatly to her character.

Thanks :P I try. I was thinking something different for the hair, instead of the bun at the back. Maybe a ponytail from the top of the head. Lets see if I can find something... ah!

Maybe something like this: http://cdn.glamcheck.com/fashion/files/2011/12/Katerina-Grah...

But stuck to the back of her head, and not over the shoulder.

Bun wouldn't be terrible.

Bun wouldn't be terrible.  She has a maternal image in Dunmer society.

I'd say bun would be preferable, but Jors said she'll do the concepts, so better leave some space for modification, depending on what she comes up with ;)

I love it!

I love it!

I'll do two prototypes, one with the bun, and the other with her hair like that.

And then I might attempt to make her feet!

What about styling Azura's

What about styling Azura's toga like a Qartheen dress for the statue?

BE AWARE the above links to a dress style similar to the flag of Virginia.

Yo, smitey you want to just throw a nsfw tag on that. I don't really mind but you know but some do blablabla...you get what I mean

Edit: That'll do smite I guess

Well, that would be a really

Well, that would be a really good thing considering who Azura is - the most motherly of all Daedra. The Quarthen gown does look like something adapted for breast feeding, which would make sense. As long as Tyveras doesn't mind modelling a breast I'd be up for having that.

And yeah, this might sound like some fetish thing (but it's not really) - the feet are extremely important and hard to get right :P So be sure to give them some time.

Well, that is a lot to consider. But I'll definitely give the Qartheen dress a go. And I'll definately be careful with feet. Makes me glad they added an armature deformer in Blender recently, will hopefully make posing and sculpting Azura a bit easier.

And I do love the hair variants, Jors. My favourites are 1 and 2, so I'll see if I can test both.

Nice work all around. Really happy to see you continuous contributing to the project Tyveras :)

You've turned out to be one of the people who have really made sure the project keep ticking along.

Jors all your art work will be used as paintings in for Velothi tombs, so they can be used two fold as concept and actual in game assets.

I agree, that one looks best.

I agree, that one looks best.

Be aware, though - the Moon and Star is Nerevar's thing, not Azura's.  The ring was given to Nerevar by the Dwemer, and later blessed by Azura.  Azura herself is associated with Azura's star - not just the artifact by the same name, but a star that only appears on the horizon at dawn, and again at dusk.

Azura is also associated heavily with roses, for some reason.

As this is the Cave of the Incarnate, if you're going to have the actual ring Moon-and-Star in her hands, that would be fine.  Just don't associate that symbol with her erroneously.

In Daggerfall she was holding a black rose, my guess is that moon&star versions of her are usually Dunmer depiction. Now that I think of it, I'd love to some day design a Khajiit depiction of her, as they're the second race that worships her most after Dunmer :D

Hey guys. Thanks for all the hard work you're putting in helping me with this, especially you Jors. Your sketches are really helping me along with this. I just wish I had seen your dress sketches first, because I already started simulation tests for a quartheen style dress. But no matter, I'll make a new one :)

And thanks Happy, that does mean a lot to me. I'll try and keep up the good work.

And with such sappiness out of the way, I should probably post updates. Cause everyone loves updates!

Here is here without her dress.

And the feet aren't quite right.  The legs should be wider spread/flatter so that the tops of the feet may fit nicely in the crook of the knee.

I was really paranoid that the feet would come back to bite me. How right I was.

Anyway, thanks for the image. I've been using it to retweak my base model. I should hopefully have something to post later today. And the reason I haven't tilted the head yet, is because I'm still sculpting it. Easier for me if its pointed up. I'll change it later.

I've been working on this all

I've been working on this all day. Fixed the feet, added some hair. Did a lot on her robes. All in all I think it was a productive day.

... Anyone says the feet are wrong, I may have a breakdown.

At the risk of losing what

At the risk of losing what little Karma I have, this sculpt worries me: the curvature of her back and her waist looks very thin, like she's being restrained by a corset or being stretched. Her shoulders are similarly undeveloped and should be broadened to balance out her head. Her neck looks unnaturally skinny, and her leg position looks extremely uncomfortable, and should be redone in the style proposed by Smite's stock or Jors' concept.

As a matter of personal taste, I feel like her lips look too pursed and inflated, and should be lowered from her nose; she looks like a DBZ character with her lips so close to her nostrils. I'd also thin out her jaw and make her bone structure more defined; she seems kind of... nebulous to me. Not a lot of character. She should also be looking down, as Truly suggested.

I realize this will across as harsh, and again I apologize, but I see what I consider to be core design flaws (not just personal taste, but anatomical sense) that need to be addressed.

I'm sorry, but I have to say it: That was possibly the silliest comment I've ever seen. This statue is for the Cavern of the Incarnate and anywhere else there is a meditating Azura statue.

No body shot yet. Just working on getting the head right.

Could you post the next

Could you post the next pictures of the statue in a different material rather than red clay. I'd suggest something like matcap white just because it usually easier to make out the details in a sculpt.

Only two fair criticism I

Only two fair criticism I care to give is that her head seems rather disproportionate to the rest of her body. A.k.a.; the head is massive, and should be toned down to match how petite the sculpture is making her look. I would also remove the feet for two reasons, the first being that her posture seems a tad awkward for the dress she is wearing. The second would be so save you some time detailing the model, albeit that may be a bit moot considering your talent. Do with it as you will, the feet are a matter of personal taste in my view. You're doing a terrific job.

Cannot wait for this scene to be reinvented.

It's possible to have the legs in a position as in the stock image I posted.  It's just tricky, but the legs as in the concept art is important to maintain the esthetic we're going for.

It's not a crossed position, though. It's a meditative pose, with the feet over instead of under the legs. The feet should be visible in this pose, resting in the crook of each knee.

It's called the lotus position, and is meant to represent meditative contemplation for the purposes of this statue. Doing another position would not get the message across.

Would look a lot more natural if you simply bent the soles of the feet inward, burying her toes into the crook of the knee a bit. Other than that, looks great.
