Diseases

Diseases are needed to make full completed creatures.
I wonder how to remake interesting and plausible diseases without attributes.

Main Skyrim diseases are pretty simple and tolerable. They are basically penalties to MP/HP/SP and their regeneration and penalty to skills' efficiency. Diseases in Morrowind must be based on this, but would be really nice to have any additional annoying scripted (chance to drop weapon for example) or visual effects (like blur vision) for them.

Another step forward that's possible to make - to have specific cures for different conditions. In basic/vanilla morrowind there are 7 ingr. for Cure Common Disease and 2 for Cure Blight (that maybe need to be threated as in vanilla). Would be nice to have at least 3 ingr. for each disease threatment, and that is possible only with additional ingredients. Would be nice to have associated saints and gods to heal different diseases.

With additional need to have 'Panacea potion' to heal any disease - that would be need for 16x3 ingr. effects. They can be implemented as ingr-s from new plants (such as made by Vita for Bitter Coast) and as ingredients produced as additional parts of animals (for example eye of scrib or liver of rat) and existing plants (leaf of Black Anther). Some things can be produced as junk of another activity (seeds from edible fruits, and so on).

This thread exist for collection of new ideas and discussion. So be extravert.

It would be interesting if

It would be interesting if the diseases actually effected you in different ways in Skywind. For example, perhaps Swamp Fever makes your perception of the world warped in some way, perhaps you character sees foes all around when they're really calm, or perhaps the screen acts glitched or something.

Certainly more work than "lower strength", but it's something to consider.

It might be impossible to

It might be impossible to implement, but what if you could get npc's sick, and they could get other npc's sick? it'd be like corrupted blood

obviously that would be a very bad thing, don't implement this.

It would be nice to implement

It would be nice to implement appearance change (by use alternative body textures)
But idk how and how many work that is (draw some bruises on elbows [hm... why human languages have no words for inner side of joints] looks not so hard)

Another question to the masses: would it be kind to make corprus more contagious? What if make most of corprus beasts and NPC contagious enough to make player keep away from them? With a chance to get this disease from corpse and unbearable symptoms (some hallucinations i think)? That will make central parts of island unreachable for player who didnt get immunity in the main quest.

Also current categories of diseases and planned symptoms (i am not sure if all of them are possible):

I was looking through the

I was looking through the list of Morrowind diseases and the one called Greenspore gave me an idea: what if you could contract diseases from plants? It would make sense that you could pick up a disease if you were rummaging through the stinky swamps of the Bitter Coast.

"You are mucky. Even dirty

"You are mucky. Even dirty dunmers not like you. Go wash yourself"

Some states like this can be good. Also i can imagine some thickets of poisonous plants there.

Let's not get ahead of

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Hold off on plans for diseases for now, until we know how attributes and stuff will work.

Speaking of, do we have any working ideas or an ongoing discussion for attributes? I know Skyrim probably possesses hidden attributes, perhaps we could simply modify those through certain diseases (like these or Vampirism/Lykanthropy/others) or maybe certain items (potions/poisons/equipment) could make you better/faster/stronger? Spells too I suppose.

Discussions on this site are

Discussions on this site are slow and leisurely.
Maybe it gives pair-several good ideas to date when team will decide problem of attributes.
Anyway -10 to dexterity is boring debuff, and have no great difference with -25% efficiency of lockpick and pickpocket.

Actually only vampirism in The Game was made decently. Even Corprus was virtual with only two real sources of infection, despite player who chop corprus-infected things in pieces, nd loot their corpses, eat parts of them (isnt it cannibalism? or he just eat small pieces of ill god?

Would be nice to have special disastrous end of the game, when player is infected (not through the quest) and placed in Corprusarium.

That'd be awesome, and I'd love to see it in game; especially if the effects occurred as seen for other beasts, and the tribunal took you to the corprusarium.

Although the game would need to tell you very clearly that all hope for your character was lost, both beforehand (in loading screen messages, books and character dialogue?) and after with a message similar to the "prophecy has been severed" box :)

"You have been infected by corprus. Your mind and body will be corrupted by the evils of Dagoth Ur, and no potions or prayers will save you. Load a previous save, or watch the divine disease take hold"
