Any tutorial on how to use the nif converter?

Hello folks!

straight to the problem:

How does this work? Is there any tutorial? The readme is pretty much useless to me it seams. In what way is "PHP" required? (whatever it is :-)

Yeah, command line. I thought

Yeah, command line. I thought so. The readme simply fails to give a clear example of a typical command line for that specific program. People who are not so firm with these type of applications would be better helped with such an example rather than what the readme says. I do not even know if the brackets in  python convert_folder.py <inputfolder> <outputfolder> are necessary (but I guess they are not - also the word "python" seems to be redundant). Anything I have typed into the cmd so far has failed to convert the anvil folder.

Here's an example of such failure:   convert_folder.py D:\Spiele\The Elder Scrolls\Zeug\skyblivion-NIFConverter-master\anvil D:\Spiele\The Elder Scrolls\Zeug\skyblivion-NIFConverter-master\New folder -s default

I've installed python, copied the cmd into the nifconvert folder, ran it, copied the line into it, pressed enter and nothing happened apart from an error and two useless folders created.

Looks like it can't execute some external program, probably MOPP_RL.exe or other py script.

Did you download all the files from github and put then in the same dir ("Download ZIP" button on Github page)?

Yes, I did. It's all there. Am I the first one who's even trying to use this thing? I mean it was used before by the Skyblivion guys, wasn't it? I can only repeat my request on a fool proof tutorial with this.

Can't start the cmd line for

Can't start the cmd line for some reason, uninstall all other previous versions of Python but no joy. maybe I'm missing something basic as I haven't dealt with dosboxes since map making with tesannwyn.

Maybe the author of Kvatch Rebuilt be so kind to type a few basic instructions, with simple examples?

Arthadion: which models are you looking for? I have an conversion of Oblivion/SI  meshes from the original version of Skyblivion (no collision).

As I'm trying to convert my own library of models for Skyrim format,and assuming I'll be successful, I would like to ask if I need to remove the original Oblivion collision before the conversion process?

If you need only a few meshes

If you need only a few meshes, you'd better convert them manually just using importers and exporters for 3dsmax or Blender. This converter was needed because we had to convert thousands of meshes.

The problem with Skyrim is generally the lack of a good exporter and the need to tune things with nifskope. IIRC the 3ds max exporter for Oblivion generates proper collision and all that, so I thought it might be a good idea to export a custom model to be used in Skyrim for Oblivion first and just use some tool that converts it into something Skyrim compatible (and yes, I know the crooked way to get collision into Skyrim).

Nifskope is not always very much fun, you see. And when you try to convert something like say Cloud Ruler Temple, wich is a single building, you'll be having quite a lot of models to work with, I think. It could be so simple and time saving with the proper tools. The more streamlined the Bethesda games get, the less streamlined is their modding it seems...

So if this things actually worked for you guys, I would like to know how.

Well lets wait for Ormin then, he visits this forum occasionally.

The quality of his converter is superb - it understands almost all Oblivion node formats, some animations (doors, gates. etc.), all types of collisions, havok constraints, etc and produces ready to be used files without any tinkering in NifScope. What it doesn't support is particles, so any FX meshes are out of question.

One last question if I may - As I'm a late arrival to Skyrim modding can someone please point me to the most reliable exporter and for which version of 3ds max, I will be mostly converting architecture & statics.

You set the Python path on the cmd box - control panel/advance settings, environmental variables

then set up the path for your folder (where your converter is)

then CD to change directory and copy paste your converter directory

If Python is setup rightly the just type: python convert_folder.py "your meshes folder" "your destination folder" -s default -t -c mopp

I have to tell the cmd box where python is? I have no idea how to do that. And what control panel? The Windows one?

I just copied the Windows cmd into the skyblivion-NIFConverter folder and ran it from there.

Is there a log file somewhere? In my case I get always "list_Index out of range" messages and the best I could get was an empty obj file. always ends up with mopp_rl.exe crash. Perhaps you could be so kind to review or re-upload your file just in case something is missing? I really would love to bring all my personal work to Skyrim.

Could you provide us with mesh(es) with question? I'll check it myself. I'm sorry for all the problems, this tool was never meant nor prepared for be released due to lack of time, it was provided as-is, I had tested it a few times before releasing but never took proper preparations for it..

Have any of you looked at

Have any of you looked at using the NifUtilsSuite at the Niftools forum? Here is the link http://niftools.sourceforge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=4128

It has a Graphic User Interface and once setup you can export any nif in Skyrim format minus the collision from MAX or Blender and then create a collision from that mesh with the built in ChunkMerge. I have used it myself on several things and it works most of the time. On occasion you will get a bad collision but its easy enough to replicate the steps to make it. Just make sure you work with a copy of the original nif as if you use the original it could get hosed.

Hope this helps out those that want to do some converting of assets.

Hey everyone,

Sorry for not poking around for long - I'm atm focused on other projects ( but will be back to Skyblivion pretty soon I think! :) )
It was my fault - I forgot to add the template.nif to the project. Please, pull github source and copy the template to C:\template.nif . That should fix the mopp_rl crash with error code 3.

mopp_rl does not crash anymore that is now Fixed!!

but it still doesn't seem to work, When ever I type "python convert_folder.py "c:\niftest" "c:\niftestconv" -s default -t -c mopp" It Generates 1 empty .metadata file in the niftestconv folder. I attatched my error log.

Try removing the -t flag, seems like optimize spell doesnt work properly ( and it seems i cannot do anything about it - either your NIF is corrupted or optimization code is wrong - and I didnt write it :P )

-c mopp_new "Points to the wrong Directory?? For some reason it points to C:/Programy instead of the default install location for Meshlab, the workaround is Creating a folder called "Programy" in the root of your C: drive and installing Meshlabs to that Folder.

Edit2: Not sure how to work the Worldspace Converstion? Whenever I apply the (MetadataParser.pas) to a newly created Plugin. it won't do anything?

-c mopp_new probably used a hardcoded path on my disc :D sorry about that ;)

-c mopp ( collision conversion ) should be working though!

-c mopp does indeed work but for some reason not all models, even though all the models are Static. So I'm guessing -c mopp can only import simple collision or something along those lines?

On the other hand! How do I use the (MetadataParser.pas) I place it into the TES5Edit scripts folder along with (worldspace.metadata) and excuate the script on a newly created plugin but it doesn't do anything at all? Am I doing something wrong?

Hi,

I've finally had the time to look into this again but still failing conversion, on a final attempt maybe some kind soul that has been more lucky than me could kindly do this for me.

I have a few tilesets extracted from other games that I've used to patiently build my own version of tes4 Tamriel (on Tamriel Heighmaps) but now I am hoping to reset this work on Skyrim.

I don't mind passing these models to anyone that helps me with the converting, bearing in mind this can only be used for personal projects.

I got the converter to work for the most part, but it will show up invisible in the Creation Kit.... Still don't know why? I posted the directions a few posts up.

FYI the DaggerfallTeam Account is my second account..

I'll give the converter another shot, I'll look more into updating the Tangent Space. What I did was convert my models then use Pyffi to optimize the newly converted models then import them into the CK.... -_-  should of thought about those Tangent Spaces.
