[WIP] Exquisite Robe

Hi,
I've been asked to attack the Exquisite Robe. Eloth has identified the two main materials as Leather and silk.
Here's my initial breakdown of what I think makes up the garment. I plan to start blocking it out shortly.  I've not seen the Morrowind version in 3D. Please let me know asap if you think there's anything wrong with the breakdown or weather there's anything you wish to add. (Like the fact that I've completely missed the collar)

I say you should feel free to

I say you should feel free to deviate from the original as much as you want. I thought the old one made characters look like a stick of butter.

When I first started playing

When I first started playing Morrowind all those years ago, I absolutely hated this robe. It stuck out like a sore thumb compared to most everything else, but I think that was the point all along, to have a robe so flamboyant that it exuded the (possibly unfounded) confidence of a peacock! The flashy colors and the runic patterns really gives the robe a certain...panache. Anyways, I also think that it doesn't have to be exactly the same but it would be better if the snazzy orange and bright yellow are still present- and maybe a wider collar? I think it would add more 'flashy wizard' vibe to the whole thing.

Yeah,

Kool, Modern shaders will also improve it's garish vibe. With the Silk looking like Silk rather than brightly coloured cotton.  I've been browsing the Skyrim leather armours to ensure I maintain the games thick Leather Visuals.  These two deviant art accounts have some great leather working references for the seams too:

I'm still in the block-out phase atm. I hope to have the general shape ready to show off tonight.

This is a really cool

This is a really cool redesign of this robe:

Very Telvanni, gives off that pompous extravagant wizard vibe. It's not a concept done for Skywind (it was made two years before even the release of Skyrim), but I don't think anyone would mind if we base our model after their brilliant work from 5 years ago.

Here's another approach, with more traditional Telvanni brown, but I'm not a big fan of this colour scheme. Nevertheless, this is how the robe might look in more modern renditions:

The improved collar on that

The improved collar on that artangelo drawing looks very much like the sort of thing Ravanna was asking for, I like the idea of proper metal buckles clipping the drapes to the chest piece too.
As for the Spider Silk, I'm interested in adding patterns, and being a courser silk should give it some nice values against the deep red Silk I'll have around the side. Will also stop the main yellow elements being 'too' shiney. Considering Plain cotton for the orange layer underneath.

Here's the Blockout from

Here's the Blockout from today.
Drapes are reference only, they're just modified from the oblivion mesh.  The final version will be a fixed width.  The black bars are simply to show where things are held in place. I'm not yet settled on what kind of buckles to utilise here.
All criticism is welcome.

Hey Fenn! Looking good.

Hey Fenn! Looking good. Definitely has potential. I'm no modeler, so I can't really comment on much. I was wondering if maybe the length of the sleeves are a bit too short? Relating it to real clothes, those would be half way up his arms once he bends them.

I think the arm thickness of

I think the arm thickness of the robe makes them appear short. I should thin them down to give them a more slender, Lengthy appearance. Once the mesh hits zbrush I'll set it to follow the form of the arm more closely. You don't need to be a 3D artist to see what's not working, Keep up the crits :)

A quick mockup concept I

A quick mockup concept I painted, might help:

Always use warmer yellow, that is almost orangy. Pure yellow tends to look like piss in shadowed areas. Unless that's what you're going for :P

This isn't a Telvanni only

This isn't a Telvanni only robe. Many NPC's from Imperial Mages Guild wear it too.

That painting looks dope

That painting looks dope Drago. Why do you guys think this is Telvanni only? The wood elf in the Balmora Mages guild wears it.

Really like the first draft

Really like the first draft so far. The only possible criticism I might have has also already been addressed (the short-looking sleeves). Also, Drago's concept is really interesting in that you essentially have the two runic stripes at the front made from what I assume is draped cloth. I would keep the arms yellow though, maybe with orange fringes?

Cheers for the concept

Cheers for the concept Dragomir, I can't tell you enough how highly i rate such aid. The colours in the mockup-up are default Max ones just to identify the purpose of the parts. replacing the crosses with runes has been mentioned a few times now so I'll try it. Ditching the side-panels for straps like your image looks pretty kool. Your collar design is also too good to ignore.

Lelek made this, I thought it

Lelek made this, I thought it should be brought up as reference, it could be nice to restore the pointy collar.

iceFlame, I may thieve the

iceFlame, I may thieve the pattern on the yellow silk, the other elements don't really appeal though. Lelek has managed to make the panels of the drapes very floaty, I imagined them having considerable weight.  I'd love to give it the wide sleeves but I'm concerned it wont animate well in game.

I think it should look as close to the original as possible. I love it's flashyness. (flashyness is totally a word!)

No more tug of war with the

No more tug of war with the 3d artists please. let Fenn do the work.

Fenn, for decorations, u can paint the patterns on a separate photoshop image, and overlay it in zbrush or Photoshop later.

I've not had a lot of time

I've not had a lot of time for this lately so I can only apologize for the slow progress.
In any case, I had some free time this evening and set about refining the blockout in zBrush.
No Fancy details yet. Just finalizing the general shape and what major parts go where.

Sorry guys,

Sorry guys,
I'm packing this in.
I've been asked by my Tutor to concentrate solely on animation from now on.  If anyone picks this up and wants any of my files then I'll hand them over.
Best of luck to the next sculptor of the Exquisite robe.  I hope the excellent feedback already in this forum gives you a good head start.

I like it but please can you

I like it but please can you remove the shoulders? They will look much better on an armor not in robe.
