This wont be updated for a while, as 2 legged creatures are a bitch to develop.
The pipeline is thus:
Scale the sabre cats skeleton, heavily, until it matches the guar shape, in 3dsmax, as a concept/test.
Alex then imports the sabre cat skeleton in nifskope and scales it to the very same values.
I import that as an fbx, skinned with model of sabre cat, and set to work modelling AROUND this new shape. But 1st I did a concept:
I will email khalor to ask about the bone nodes that allow for the player to attach to the creature, and whether scaling this will produce a problem.

[WIP] Guar
Edited by: grumpycat on 03/15/2014 - 01:37
This concept is great! The Guar definitely need an update.
The concept looks extremely nice as always!
This would be much easier and look better if you map it to the dragon skeleton instead of the sabrecat. In the CK you can set the dragon to be on the ground instead of flying and you don't have to have the model weighted to any part of the wings (just the head, tail and legs)
The reason i say this is if you look at the sabrecat animations it mostly uses it front paws to attack, it has no tail animations so your guar will be very stiff looking and the back legs of quadruped during a running gait always leave the ground at the same time. (the guar will be hopping around like a kangaroo)
The dragon animations on the other hand has head tracking, a lot of passive idle animations and twice as much combat animations than the sabrecat. You wont have half the trouble scaling to the dragon skeleton as the shape of the guar in that picture is almost identical to the dragon body shape.
Hope this goes well for you guys, it looks like an interesting project.
Love the look, another winner of course.
I'm going to have to agree with Devonark with this. I went through most of the animations of the Morrowind Gaur, Sabre cat and the Dragon, and the Dragon is better suited for a number of reason.
Guars main idle animations are slow walk, crouch, lay on ground.
Mainly the fact the Sabre cats animations don't look right if it just the front legs (or just back for that matter) are used. I know you want to heavily modify it, but I'm not sure what you're left with if you have to get everything right! The balance and motion just don't quite fit. Especially in getting up or down and turning sides ways.
The dragon on the other hand has the perfect motion between legs and tail. Bang on in my opinion. Admittedly there is a whole neck motion and wings (arms) that needs to be truncated (or removed?).
Pity if that is the case because its got perfect get and and down motions and lots of clever little tail and crouching motions which would be perfect for idle Guars seeming to express their moods.
problem with the dragon skeleton is that it dont have any normal attack anims, so would have to make new, but i guess thats no problem for alex wonderboy :P
It will be much easier to do it with saber cat I have an idea. Give me time
just let them do there thing if it fials it sucks but if it works very nice it would be very good because there are many 2 leg animals in skywind that els wont have a good skeleton
The Dragon has 3 ground bites, actually the same animation as Guar with head tilting and then bite.
I seriously employ you to look at the Morrowind animations, go on load them up in 3ds max and look at the motion of the walk, run, crouching and bite. Make sure you look how important the tail is.
Except for the forward trotting, I couldn't find a single Sabre cat animation that would be good for one reason or another. Mainly due to having at least one leg up in the air at anytime, especially with it cocked backwards in the air, due to it having balance on back legs. Even the bite attack looks totally wrong.
My belief is that every single ground animation of the Dragon can be used and look good because it is bipedal and uses its tail for balance. The walking is just far superior to anything the Sabre does matchup wise.
Not trying to make things harder, trying to make things easier, it just doesn't make any sense to me why you'd want to go down that track!
what about the long neck of the dragon and the short neck of the guar?
Can probably be fixed.
Thats the million dollar question, can the neck and shoulder length be truncated? If yes then will save a lot of work with animations. If no then basically all the animations will have to be done by scratch with the Sabre, including the attack animation.
Didn't Alex scale the bones for the Ogrim? Can't he do that for the Guar?
thats how we did the guar skeleton already, scaling the sabre cat.
Scaling the dragon is more complex, far more complicated type of skeleton.
We can only try and visually test both
Just trust me. It's going to look good. i already have a solution to the attack anims, and i already figured out how we can make it mountable. :)
You guys will love it.
for all you people questioning the integrity of guar skeleton.

perfect thing for the gaur cant wait to see it whit a gaur model
also it looks very funny the saber cat squirrel make it a mod and put it on staem and nexus i knowe others wil like it to
alright i started looking at other possibilities for guar and alit and kagouti, i morphed a dragon skeleton. this is a rough draft of it.
How about basing the movement on a chicken? serious question.
Hey, Im pretty new to these forums but I have an idea about the guar. I know the guar was already made in Monster Mod at the Skyrim Nexus. Couldn't we just use that? You would probably have to get permission from either Dogtown 1 or Ironman 5000 (makers of the mod). Anyways here is a picture of the guar.
*cries of laughter.
Adoring fan:
We had our own Khalor and Merlin take the elements of the mod, with permission, and create a summonable guar that u can mount.
Whilst the system is sound, the model and skeleton could do with improvement, so we're redoing those elements.
All these years later and the adoring fan is still right there... begging for it.. must.. not... murder......
Anywho yeah the new concept is really cool, sort of reminds me of something from Odd World. Cant wait!
Yo, Adoring Fan!
Everyone knows that I, Fargoth, am the only annoying Wood Elf here! Now back to the Skyblivion forums with you!
Sorry, had to say that... :3
Ah kinsman, how my heart soars to look upon a brother Bosmer!
Okay, glad to see skywind is developing so nicely!
Hey guys! So today is my first day ever 3d modeling. Literally just downloaded the program this morning and I thought i'd take a shot at Ravanna's Guar :] So this is what I ended up with. It's not complete yet and i'm sure it's not even usable because I more than likely did something wrong haha. Anyways, I'm still very proud of how it's turned out so far :]
that looks very good for you first try
WOW! You've got some natural talent!
I've done a little bit more but not a whole lot :] I'm just doing this as practice i'm not expecting it to be used haha.
This is something we can concentrate on after recreating all the models we need right now - well.. i think.
half-sabertooth cat is scary enough. We need more undead_things like it.
Wild Guar finished and skinned,
Next will consider the domesticated/herd fatter guar, 4 legged guar cow concept, and guar pup
Wow Rav! I wasn't sure how you'd make the Guar look convincing in high-poly since it was such a strangely cute and weirdly cartoonic creature for Morrowind but you've truly managed to capture the essence of the old one while giving it a much-needed modern touch. This is both functional and strangely scary - I absolutely love it!
That looks really good. It's a huge improvement over the original.
dawww cootchy coo
Woooh man! Both are awesome!
Dragon guar is clearly best guar!

But what of Gaenor?
Great job Ravanna! Absolutely impressive!
lol that looks like a fat baby gaur very cute
this is simply stunning! great ones!
That Guar's grin is a bit creepy, really nice models as usual.
I saw this guar pup concept art on the forums and I thought it looked perfect imo, however yours is great too. If you haven't already finished the model maybe you could get it to look more like this? It's not a big deal as they both look good although you might want to make the eyes a bit smaller, they seem too big to me.
But great work!
Ravana the guar looks EPIC! never imagined that it could look this insanely good 0.0 you are a god amongst devs!
Reminds me of creepy Italian alien photos :P

Looks like a fetus
Creepy awesome! I would add even wider teeth.
@Ravanna: what soft do you use for making low-poly?
